Nigeria COVID-19 Update (410 New Cases Recorded)

  Nigeria COVID-19 update - 18/8/2020 410 new cases of Coronavirus were recorded in Nigeria on Tuesday August 18, as confirmed by the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).    A breakdown of the new cases across states is as follows; Lagos-210, FCT-45, Ondo-30, Plateau-21, Edo-19, Ogun-16, Oyo-13, Nasarawa-12, Bauchi-11, Enugu-10, Kwara-7, Kaduna-6, Anambra-4, Ebonyi-3, Abia-2, Rivers-1.    There are now 49,895 confirmed cases of Coronavirus across the country. 981 deaths have been recorded, 37,051 patients who recovered from the disease have also been discharged.   

Ex-Governer's Wife Warns: Don't Play Politics With My Husbands Death

The wife of late Ex-Governor of Oyo State, Mrs. Florence Ajimobi, yesterday, accused the Oyo State government of playing politics with her husband’s death. She also accused Governor Seyi Makinde of not calling her or paying a condolence visit to her since the death of her husband last Thursday. She said this on a day her husband’s remains were laid to rest amid tight security at his Oluyole residence at 10:05 am on yesterday. Earlier, there was a heated controversy over where the former governor should be buried. Newsmen gathered that the Oyo State Government was reportedly reluctant in allowing the Ajimobi family to bury the body at Agodi GRA due to a pending court case. The widow of the former governor advised the governor to avoid playing politics with the death of her husband. The Use Of Face Shield Against Covid-19

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has said there is no evidence that face shields alone can protect against COVID-19. The Director General of the NCDC, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, said this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja. The warning follows the new trend of Nigerians wearing face shields in public settings. The NCDC director said there is evidence that a face shield might reduce exposure in healthcare workers but not meant to function alone as protection. “Presently there is no evidence on the effectiveness of face shields for community use by the public.  “Face shields are most important in healthcare settings to protect healthcare workers during healthcare processes.  “We do not have evidence at the moment that using face shields outside healthcare settings can protect members of the community. Few Weeks After Being Spat On, She Died Of COVID-19

A black woman who works at the British railway, has died from corona virus    after being spat on while she was working at Victoria station in central London. In a statement on Tuesday, her union, the Transport Salaried Staffs Association (TSSA), said that Mujinga, 47, was working with a colleague when a member of the public assaulted them, spat and coughed over them and said he had the novel corona virus. Mujinga, who had an underlying health condition, was working for Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) on the station concourse at the time of the incident on March 22. An investigation into the incident had been launched, British Transport Police said in a statement to CNN.

A Woman Fell To Her Death Celebrating End Of Lockdown.

A young  woman from  Kazakhstan  has fallen more than 110 feet to her death just last weekend after posing for a cliffside photo to celebrate the end of the country's COVID-19  lockdown. It was her companion who called the emergency services, and her lifeless body was pulled out of the water and taken to the morgue of Antalya Forensic Medicine Institue for an autopsy. Authorities determined her death was an accident, according to her relatives.

Video Teleconferencing service, Zoom, announced that the platform now has more than 300 million daily active meeting participants. Zoom CEO Eric S. Yuan, last month shared that the company had hit 200 million daily active meeting participants. That means the company has added more than 100 million users in roughly three weeks' time. French Football League Has Been Cancelled

The 2019-20  Ligue 1  season has been abandoned after the French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe's announcement that no sporting events will be allowed to take place until September. Philippe has confirmed that there is no possibility of Ligue 1 resuming until September amid the ongoing fight against coronavirus, with France still in a state of lockdown. “The big sporting affairs cannot occur before September,” he said in a national assembly on Tuesday. “The 2019-20 professional football season cannot return.” The French professional league (LFP)  announced plans to restart the campaign on June 17 last week, and UEFA has set a deadline of August 2 for domestic leagues to reach their natural conclusions.

The Australian government's new coronavirus contact tracing app which was released on Sunday, was downloaded 1million times in just 5 hours of launch, that is, approximately 1 out of every 25 Australians is using the app.   COVIDSafe  uses Bluetooth to connect with other phones within 1.5 metres (4.9 feet) which also have the app installed. If they are in contact for over 15 minutes (fiftheen minutes), the app records data such as the date, time, contact distance and duration, and the other user's encrypted identification code. This information is stored on the user's phone for 21 days, after which it is automatically deleted.
