BMW’s CEO reveals plans for the i NEXT, a self-driving car set for a 2021 debut

The above image is the  Vision NEXT 100 , the concept car BMW showed off back in March to note that, as it celebrated its 100 th  anniversary, the company was spending more time looking forward than back. The automaker’s CEO Harald Krueger struck a similarly futuristic tone during  its annual shareholder meeting  in Munich this week, though the chief executive was far more pragmatic in his prognostications, discussing the sorts of innovation his company anticipated bring to market within the next decade. Krueger described BMW’s relatively near-term strategy as containing “both evolutionary and disruptive elements.” After looking slightly back to the BMW i3 of 2013, Krueger, projected forward to the 2018 BMW i8 Roadster, and even more compellingly, a new, feature-packed vehicle for 2021. The exec didn’t let out a ton of details about the forthcoming car – just enough to make the auto-watching world sit up and pay attention. “[The i8] will be followed in ...

A startup CEO and former Googler says these 4 mistakes make you seem unqualified in a job interview

1. Talking about how nervous you are You might think it's endearing to admit to nerves in an interview, says Wessel. But the truth is, it's not a good look. "Employers expect you to be an adult, calm under pressure, and able to handle the kinds of stressful situations that you might encounter in the workplace. Talking about your nerves, and by implication looking for pity, is a great to way to send them the message that you're not ready to handle a real office environment." 2. Failing to do your research "I once had a candidate walk into the room and ask me if I was the office manager," Wessel recalls. "Not a great start!" As you prepare for an interview, you should find out everything you can about the company, its leaders, and the person with whom you'll be speaking, she continues. "Employers want to see that you've done your homework, and that you're engaged with the company and its issues." It's tota...

A man who went undercover in a jail for 2 months discovered a disturbing truth about veterans who are locked up

It's all too common for veterans in the US to wind up in jail. And behind bars, many of them don't have access to the services they need to get their lives back on track. That's what the participants on the A&E documentary series "60 Days In" learned during their stay at Clark County Jail in southern Indiana. The show follows seven people who go undercover as inmates for two months to expose problems within the system. One of the participants, Zac, estimated 10% of the inmates he lived with were veterans, all of whom suffered from depression or post-traumatic stress disorder. Like many drug-addicted inmates, they often resorted to homemade drugs  to self-medicate. He said most inmates weren't aware the jail offered veterans advocacy services and an Alcoholics Anonymous support group - and that jail staff rarely advertised the fact that such programs existed. "Regardless of whether or not they're in jail, they still took the same oat...

Meet HoloFlex, world's first holographic flexible smartphone

A smartphone that lets you interact with 3D videos and images without having to use any headgear or glasses sounds impossible, but scientists claim to have developed the first holographic flexible smartphone, and have named it HoloFlex. The phone is capable of rendering 3D images with motion parallax and stereoscopy to multiple simultaneous users and that too without head or eyewear, thus offering a completely new way of interacting using with your smartphone. Not only this, it also allows for glasses-free interactions with 3D video and images without burdening the user, as stated by Roel Vertegaal, from Queen's University in Canada. Featuring a 1920x1080 full HD Flexible Organic Light Emitting Diode (FOLED) touchscreen display, it renders images into 12-pixel wide circular blocks, thus making the full view of the 3D object from a particular viewpoint. Also, its bend sensor allows one to bend the phone as a means of moving objects along the z-axis of the display and due to its wi...

YouTube tests an in-app messenger for sharing videos with friends

YouTube as a messaging app? Sure, why not! Everyone’s doing it, after all. In case you missed it: YouTube  announced  this week that it’s testing a new feature with a subset of its mobile app user base that will allow them to easily share videos with family and friends. Users with the feature can chat about those videos in a new tab in the app, the company says. The feature makes sense, as a lot of YouTube’s user base already shares videos with their friends – but over SMS, iMessage or another messaging platform. YouTube is smart to try to capitalize on that behavior, in order to increase usage of its own app as well as the time its users spend engaged with its service on mobile. Not that YouTube is struggling when it comes to mobile, of course. Its mobile usage has been steadily climbing over the years, and now sees average mobile viewing sessions of 40 minutes. It’s also bigger than any single U.S. cable TV network with the key demographic that includes thos...

Three ways tech is reinventing a surprising sector

More than 1 million users. Sixteen billion monthly page views. Ninety-nine percent user engagement. If these sound like stats from  tech companies, you’re right. Except these tech  companies are nonprofits. In Steve Case’s new book,  The Third Wave , he argues that this next generation of the Internet will transform major industry sectors and become integrated into everything we do. We are already seeing the tremendous impact of software and the Internet transform one of the least discussed areas — the nonprofit  sector . With the growing ubiquity of mobile phones and the Internet, combined with plummeting connectivity costs and, in some cases, free infrastructure, it’s not  surprising that organizations focused on scaling impact are integrating technology into the core of their solution. But you may be surprised to hear how deep technology’s impact has already been on the nonprofit sector . Scaling impact Traditional nonprofits often run into barr...
